5,000 lb Deadlift

My Result

5,670 lb — 18 reps × 315 lb in 35 seconds

The Story

This was the April 2026 Challenge of the Month from Strength Origins. The rules are straightforward: pull enough total tonnage to clear 5,000 lb in under a minute. Touch and go is allowed, straps are not. At 315 lb, the math puts the minimum at 16 reps. My initial plan was conservative — hit 8, rest briefly at the top, then two clusters of 4 to grind out the minimum. I figured 16 clean reps at 315 would be manageable but tight on grip. What actually happened was better than planned. I was running 5/3/1 that cycle and this fell on a deadlift day, so I treated it as an opener before my working sets. The bar moved well, and I cleared 18 reps in about 35 seconds without needing to break it into clusters. Final tonnage came out to 5,670 lb — comfortably over the 5,000 lb threshold. The training that made this possible wasn't challenge-specific. It was just consistent 5/3/1 programming with AMRAP sets that build exactly the kind of submaximal endurance you need for something like this. 315 is roughly 63% of my max, so the reps were there — it was really just a matter of grip and pacing.
